"We walked outside and he said he needed a place to go and looked around like he was looking for someone. Next thing I know is that a cop drives by and Henry says, ‘Welp… here’s my ride' and grabs someone's drink and throws it at the cop car.”
— Douglas Hurt, describing Henry Earl, America’s most-arrested man
As you know I’m rather friendless. I don’t care enough about people to take trouble about them, and naturally they don’t trouble me—why should they?
"Admittedly, these cases present an unhappy situation which, unfortunately, no reviewing court decision can cure but which only time alone can alleviate."
It wasn’t until I was 19 or 20 that I was told my grandmother, Goldie, was not really my grandmother—she was actually my great-grandmother. And not until yesterday afternoon, until I read an Ohio Supreme Court decision from 16 July, 1958—which began with the quoted sentence above—did I know of my mother’s real maiden name.
All my life, I’ve thought of myself as less than what I ought to be—I’ve never seen myself as a man possessed of strong will. I feel I bend so readily to others’ charms or influence. Even with the alarms sounding off in my mind I’ll somehow manage to set myself down those familiar, easily-swayed paths over and over again. I question whether it’s a struggle against poor impulse control; or if it’s that I’m merely easy to manipulate. Whichever is the truth (and perhaps it’s a mix), I hate the former and I fear the latter.
Are you the new person drawn toward me?
To begin with take warning, I am surely far different from what you suppose…

We must come down from our heights, and leave our straight paths for the by-ways and low places of life, if we would learn truths by strong contrasts; and in hovels, in forecastles, and among our own outcasts in foreign lands, see what has been wrought among our fellow-creatures by accident, hardship, or vice.
